  • The book is a masterpiece with a lot of fascinating and useful insights.
  • Rule #5 “Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them.” Peterson can take the most difficult ideas and make them entertaining.
  • Jordan Peterson manages to explain suffering, and pain in life better than anyone else! Maybe it’s because he has survived quite a lot of pain and learned so much from experience.
  • This book is not an easy read, but you will probably find some real nuggets of wisdom if you read it to the end.

In his best-seller, the 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, Dr. Jordan Peterson has several thought-provoking ideas. Unlike a typical self-help book, Peterson draws on unique research into authoritarianism, philosophy, and religion to develop his 12 rules for life.

Peterson is very creative as he packages the “rules” with provocative and enigmatic titles. Most of it works for me. Jordan Peterson makes you think as he demonstrates a high degree of intellectual – and personal – integrity and courage.

While the book makes a handful of strong, controversial claims – it has a lot of wisdom. In particular, the parenting advice (raise children not to make them like you, but to make sure they can fit into society) and relationships were fascinating.

Honestly, if I only read the first chapter of this book, I would have been disappointed because it seemed like evolutionary biological/psychological nonsense. However, I believe Peterson made a few pressing arguments in the first chapter.

Nonetheless, the rest of the book is worthwhile. It is the basis for parenting. It guides you to raise independent children who can help others become productive contributors to society.

Who Is Dr. Jordan B. Peterson?

Peterson is a compassionate teacher who won’t let his students get off without working hard and achieving not only their personal best but something of real value. His advice is a breath of fresh air far more likely to benefit by taking it than listening to most of the academic profession’s misguided opinions.

Dr. Peterson is respectful of the ones he interacts with and listens actively to what they have to say. He also thinks before answering. Moreover, he readily admits his limitations but boldly insists on a clear definition of terms. He is a genuinely decent man with a terrific sense of humor.

Jordon Peterson is a profound philosophical thinker – and he learns from history, which is a good thing. Layered on top of his honesty, he is careful with his words. Peterson speaks his mind without a pretense. Even though it’s honest, he talks in a very self-controlled manner and maintains civility.

Psychology, like any field, can be used for good or evil. And Jordan Peterson has chosen to use it for good. Even though I may have a small number of disagreements with Jordan Peterson’s views, I feel I have an excellent internal dialogue when reading his brilliant book.

Jordan Peterson respects people, and that’s an excellent starting point for any psychologist/psychoanalyst. This book is about 12 psychological truths that Jordan Peterson believes will help people look at themselves and make a difference to themselves, their families, and the world. And it has made a difference in many lives today.

What Are The 12 Rules For Life: An Antidote to Chaos?

Dr. Peterson provides a wealth of information that supports each of his 12 rules for life. The pace and structure of the 409 pages book are quite different. You still receive precious ideas hidden within personal stories, historical writings, biblical references and passages, folkloric tales, etc.

There is a high note of academia that comes across in Peterson’s writings. So, you’re going to wind up reading parts several times to make sure that you actually “got it.”

This book draws on several stories from the Bible that serve, in most cases, as illustrations. Just have an open mind. Hence, this is an excellent book for those who can handle a figurative look in the mirror.

Peterson states the 12 Rules at the chapter level. Moreover, in each chapter, he deep dives into the interpretation, implementation, and application of these rules.

The Rule That Stands Out – Rule No. 5

Some of his rules, such as “Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them,” may seem a little frivolous at first, but he digs deep and reveals some important truths that support them.

Why should you care if your children do things that make you dislike them? Isn’t part of being a good parent is to love your children unconditionally, regardless of their behavior? Well, yes and no. Yes, you should love them unconditionally, but no, don’t engender lousy behavior.

Look at the big picture. As a parent, you tend to love your children unconditionally, but nobody else in society has that responsibility. Suppose you allow your children to develop undesirable personality traits that cause you to dislike them. In that case, other people with no such obligation to love them will even dislike them more, to their great detriment. It will be harder for them to develop friendships and healthy social life.

Excellent Book

At first, the 12 Rules for Life may sound like the title for another cheery, self-help book, written by a self-assured guru. However, if you listened extensively to the author or read his books, you will know that he is anything but a lightweight. On the contrary, he is well-qualified by his work and education to offer philosophically sound advice. I like the book and recommend it for millennials, especially. They need his rules to counteract the sense of entitlement; many were taught as kids and never thoroughly shaken. I love this book, and I am glad I purchased it. The knowledge in this book helped me do better and be better. The book is VERY intelligently written and has some big concepts and important topics.

PROS
  • The book is a masterpiece with a lot of fascinating and useful insights.
  • Rule #5 “Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them.” Peterson can take the most difficult ideas and make them entertaining.
  • Jordan Peterson manages to explain suffering, and pain in life better than anyone else! Maybe it’s because he has survived quite a lot of pain and learned so much from experience.
  • This book is not an easy read, but you will probably find some real nuggets of wisdom if you read it to the end.
CONS
  • The book, at times, relies a bit too heavily on a handful of philosophers and Christian theology to be persuasive on all fronts.
  • I wish Jordan made the book a bit more “to the point.”

Dr. Jordan Peterson As A World Renowned Speaker

Anyone who has seen Jordan Peterson’s interviews with various people would be well accustomed to how he speaks. He sometimes talks through what he’s thinking, and so you’ve got to concentrate.

In this book, Dr. Jordan Peterson writes as if he’s speaking. Like many readers of Peterson’s book, I first learned about him when I watched his lectures and speeches on youtube. He can express a thousand valuable concepts per minute with precision, objectivity, and impact.

Jordan Peterson has become a phenomenon and deservedly so. His message has made a positive difference in my life, and many others feel the same.

Nonetheless, the “12 Rules” contains nugget after nugget of wisdom. The author cannot seem to stop saying relevant and insightful things. I have gone through “12 Rules” twice now and will likely do it again (and again). He won me over after investigating his videos and podcasts. Peterson is much more effective in these forums.

If you like reading Peterson, you will probably very much enjoy listening to him in interviews. He is animated and concise. He has high regard for logic and facts.

The book titled the 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos by Jordan Peterson is not only the #1 National Bestseller, but also the #1 international bestseller as well! I couldn’t help it but buy this book and read it.

The book also spoke to me. Granted it is a rich read, thus, I had to re-read chapters to fully benefit from its wisdom. Therefore, I definitely believe that you have to be intellectually prepared to get the full impact of this book.
